Drawing Marvel's The New Mutants throughout the late 1980's has many fond memories for me. I was working with friends for the entire run of issues--writer Weezie Simonson, inkers Terry Austin and Al Williamson, editors Ann Nocenti, Bob Harras and Terry Cavanaugh--we had a great time! I also made a dizzy leap in skill during those years, largely because of the challenges of this book crowded with characters and outlandish, deliciously impossible fantasy situations. The deadlines were murderous, but I was in my 20's and full of ambition to improve. Superhero heroics were a new challenge for me then, so Weezie's wild imagination kept me stretching and grasping to capture the range of emotions, action and settings her stories demanded. I had a blast!
