Legends of the Dark Knight # 50 (1993) was my first book length assignment for DC comics, working with writer Denny O'neill and my dear friend Archie Goodwin as editor. Archie was always a joy, and the double length issue recast Batman's first encounter with the Joker--who could ask for more fun? I was very inspired and had a wonderful time creating these pages, and this project marked the beginning of several years of steady work on Shadow of the Bat. I had been under exclusive contract with Marvel for the prior decade, so this story was a career turning point for me, and the schedule allowed me to give it my best effort.
